Gains to the proficiency of the equipped weapon are made when experience is gained from killing enemies, and such gains happen regardless of whether the kill was made by the shooter, or an alternative source. They boost a character's skill with the individual weapon types and can increase to a maximum level of 50 for each weapon type. Specific Weapon Proficiencies apply to each weapon type and are displayed on the character screen.
